Flood levels are expected to continue rising in Queensland today as residents prepare to evacuate.
Warnings are in place that the river level could peak at 10.7 metres in the border town of Goondiwindi this morning – breaking records set in the town’s 2011 floods.
Vulnerable residents have already been airlifted out.
More than 10,000 locals are on standby to evacuate as the river levels rise.
The town has been cut off, and homes flooded, as many prepare for days or potentially weeks of isolation.
Goondiwindi Mayor Lawrence Springborg urged the community to stay up to date with emergency flood plans and to remain cautious.
“Watch and act, and make sure you’re prepared, and this community is prepared if we need to come together – that’s just a normal thing we do,” he said.
Neighbouring towns around Goondiwindi may be the hardest hit.
Roads in Inglewood and Goondiwindi have been cut by flooding, with Coolmunda Dam already overflowing.
A major flood warning is in place for the Macintyre and Weir rivers.
No significant rainfall has been recorded since 9am Friday. However, flood levels continue to rise despite the lack of rain. 9News, ABC
