The town of Forbes in New South Wales’ central west is bracing for the impact of a major flood similar to that which hit the town 26 years ago.In 1990, about 132 properties in Forbes were affected by major flooding, when the river peaked at 10.65 metres.On Sunday, the town is expecting a similar volume of water with the Lachlan River set to peak at 10.6 metres.Twelve flood warnings are in place for rivers across the state, with Forbes one of the towns likely to be hit hard on the weekend.Gary Zuiderwyk from the State Emergency Service (SES) said residents had a few days to prepare.”We’re currently expecting a peak this Sunday, also major flooding continues at Jemalong following a major flood peak last Wednesday,” he said.”The river is expected to rise again to a lower peak today.”
An evacuation warning remains in place for about 20 properties in a low-lying area of Forbes.SES spokeswoman Emma Delaney said residents should be preparing as more rain is forecast over the weekend. ABC
